Of all the major outdoor turf sports, horse racing is one of the most beloved in Australia.
Many a victorious racehorse has gone down in legend over the years, but none more so than Australia’s “wondermare” Winx, who was named the equal World’s Best Racehorse earlier this year. Sharing the title with English racing star Cracksman for 2018, Winx achieved her winning 130 rating after her lightning run at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick last year.
Winx will make her final racetrack appearance on Saturday 13th April in the 2019 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The event is expected to sell out, with the Australian Turf Club preparing for over 40,000 of racing’s faithful to attend the iconic mare’s final bolt for the finish line. With Winx’s swan song race just around the corner, let’s relive the glory of her finest racing moments.
Unprecedented achievement: Winx’s crowning glory
Winx made history at the 2018 Cox Plate when she blitzed her way to victory for the fourth consecutive year. This achievement is, to date, unmatched by any other racehorse. Despite trainer Chris Waller reporting a rock-hard Moonee Valley track, the mare sailed comfortably through her winning run and achieved true turf legend status. With this win under her bridle, Winx remains unbeaten for over three years, having won 29 races consecutively with 22 of those at Group 1 level.
The Willpower of Winx: her unlikeliest win
The mare famously had a bad start to the 2017/18 season at the Warwick Stakes 2017, when she lost four lengths at race start after rearing at the gate. Even at the 350m mark, she was still running the last of eight horses. Yet with a stunning return to form, she then stormed ahead of all her competitors, taking the lead right before the finish line and emerging victorious.
A stellar track record
Winx won seven Group 1 level races in 2018 alone, and six of those were amongst the 25 most prestigious races in the world. These included the Colgate Optic White Stakes, the George Ryder Stakes and the Cox Plate, all of which are in the top 10. In the course of her shining career, the mare has won races over 1100m, 1200m, 1300m, 1400m, 1500m, 1600m, 2000m and 2200m. These stellar stats have seen her transcend even the greatness of horse household names Phar Lap, Makybe Diva and Black Caviar.
