June 22, 2017 Terry Griffiths

Is the weather rainy and miserable? Is it finally your day off after a hard week of mowing, inspecting, aerating and pruning? It’s time to sink into the sofa, kick up your feet, and put on a good movie to relax!

And what better movie to watch than one that can relate to your topiary passions, your armyworm woes and that satisfying feeling you get when the grass is exactly level? Here are our top picks of movies made for groundskeepers.

Caddyshack (1980)

A classic slapstick comedy about the inner workings of an exclusive golf club. Bill Murray plays the charismatic groundskeeper battling with a gopher problem, while a teen tries to schmooze the big wigs as a caddy to fund his college education. Caddyshack doesn’t fall short of a few laughs and is the perfect light-hearted film to give you a little well-deserved time out.

The Lazarus Project (2008)

If you’re looking for something with a little more edge-of-your-seat pizzazz, The Lazarus Project will have you biting your nails in no time! This thriller features Paul Walker as ex-con Ben Garvey, who’s given a second chance, seemingly by fate, as the groundskeeper of a mental hospital. But just when he thinks things have changed for the better, strange occurrences at the hospital make him wonder if he’s entangled himself in a much more sinister scheme.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

Safe to say most people don’t associate Harry Potter with groundskeeping straight away. But one of the most-loved characters in the entire series fills this role perfectly! Hagrid is the somewhat haphazard ‘keeper of grounds and keys’ at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is as loyal as he is curious about magical creatures that roam the forest at the edge of the school grounds. A curiosity that gets himself and his students into a spot of trouble in the second instalment of this famous series. If you want to be whisked away to a world of fantasy and adventure, this film will sweep you up in the mystery immediately!

Field of Dreams (1989)

A classic sports film with a feel-good vibe, Field of Dreams follows one man’s determination to follow his instincts by building a baseball diamond in the middle of his corn field. Whilst not technically a groundskeeper, Kevin Costner plays a farmer, Ray, who you just can’t help but cheer on. Encouraged by the ghosts of long-dead baseball legends, Ray realises that he might be fighting for more than his family’s property when it threatens to fall into bankruptcy.
