How to choose the right lawn mower for your turf

How to choose the right lawn mower for your turf
June 5, 2019 Terry Griffiths

Choosing a lawn mower can often be a daunting task if you’re not well versed on what type of mowers exist. At QTurf, we love to share the knowledge we’ve amassed of everything turf related and help out where we can, which is why we’ve written this guide for you.

Even as we head into winter, the grass will continue to grow, albeit at a slower rate. If you’ve been putting off buying a mower or are looking to upgrade, now is the time to do it so when the growth seasons come around, you’re ready to rock and roll. Choosing the right mower will depend on a few things: current machinery, budget and lawn requirements.

At QTurf, we specialise in the supply, installation and support of mowing equipment used for the maintenance of turfgrass on golf courses, sports fields, parks and gardens. The type of lawn that you have and your current equipment will dictate which unit will best suit your needs. We are the Australian Distributor of the Weidenmann Product range. Weidenmann is one of the leading manufacturers of high-class machines for turf maintenance. If you currently own a compact utility tractor, we have a range of front and rear decks that suit small to large size turfs, and everything in between.

Wiedenmann Super Pro FXL-S

Wiedenmann Super Pro FXL-S Front Mower

This front deck is excellent at providing a fine cut, even in curves. The rounded mower deck edge provides a constant flow and reduces the likelihood of blockages as well as incorporating a large metal guard that protects the mower from debris. Contact us for a price today!

Wiedenmann Super Pro TXL-H Front Mower

Featuring many of the same features as the FXL-S, the TXL-H is for rougher conditions where continuous use may be required. This is a level up in terms of professional turf maintenance but features a very low-level noise emission. Contact us for a price today!

Fieldmaster Mini park Roller Mower PMM150

If you’ve got a smaller area where the finish is not as important as a golf green, then the PMM150 is a great candidate. It features twin rollers, with 3 blades and is suitable for a 25hp tractor. School ovals often use units similar to these, or those with large lawns on a home property. Contact us for a price today!

Weidenmann Flex Cut 230 Finishing Mower

The Flex Cut is for those that have large areas to mow, such as sports grounds, parks or roughs on golf courses. This is a rear mount system which requires low drive power and adapts to land contours exceptionally well. It features a cutting width of 2.3m, so it’s capable of mowing large areas, very quickly. We stock a wide range of other site-specific mowers, including those used for orchids rows. These orchid mowers require a larger horsepower tractor, usually those ranging between 70 – 90HP. These Triple Rotor Flat Orchid Mowers come in 2 available models:
– 2900 Flat Deck Triple Rotor Orchard Mower (2.8m cut width)
– 3200 Flat Deck Triple Rotor Orchard Mower (3.1m cut width)

Both feature the same 220mm height-adjustable diameter, with ‘domed end’ rear rollers, as well as the same on the front of the unit. Mulch is able to be thrown from both sides with discharge deflectors or fit full side plates for rear discharge and mulching of small to medium-sized prunings.

To make the right decision, you’ll need to factor in what size turf you’re going to need the machine for and what you prefer. If you’re still unsure about which machine is right for you, Terry at QTurf would be happy to have a chat with you. Contact QTurf via our contact form or via telephone on 0428 290 009.
